Blackberry Orange Tea Scones

I know these scones might look like a bit of a mess, but trust me, they're yummy! So yummy in fact that my brother asked for the recipe and made them himself a few days later (and he doesn't usually bake - aside from bread). They're really soft and moist, more cakey/muffiny than sconey though. Personally I prefer my scones more scone-like but whether you call these scones or muffins, they're delicious. I found the blackberries hard to "fold" in so I had to mush them around.

Makes 18 scones

3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
5 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup butter, cold
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1 orange, juice and zest
1 cup blackberries

Preheat oven to 425F. Prepare baking sheet by greasing or using a Silpat baking mat.

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. In another bowl, combine egg, milk, juice and zest. Stir into dry ingredients, then fold in blackberries.

Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead 10-12 times. Pat down to 1/2" thickness, and cut into triangles. (Note: My dough was way too sticky to pat out, so I ended up treating them like drop scones and used an ice cream scoop. My brother didn't have any trouble patting them out though.) Place 1" apart on baking sheet and bake 12-15 minutes.

They don't look messy, they look home-style. I love orange in baked goods!

I love this type of fruit scones - I made some raspberry and white chocolate scones and they were really sticky (and fell apart when I stirred them into the dough)

I noticed the recipe has the juice of an orange so I wonder if different sized oranges would account for the difference in your dough compared to your brother's

The messier the better, I say! Your description of the texture reminds me of the scones from the bakery down the hill from me. Delicious still.

Messy is the best kind of food! I can't wait to pick some blueberries and try this!

I always find scones so dense, but if these are more cakey, they sound right up my alley! :)

We have wild blackberries growing nearby, but I can never figure out what to do with them, so I actually don't pick many of them at all. Thanks for the idea, this might change all that!

I've never put blackberries and oranges together, but the combo sounds awesome. I love orange flavored scones. Scones have such a wonderful comfort-factor.

I know people say "I'm going to have to try that" a lot probably, but I actually am going to make these soon. They look amazing!

I love the look of your scone/muffins. Should I call them scuffins? My daughter has a blackberry wilderness in her backyard. I need to go score some so I can make these!

The mix between a scone and a muffin is called a "scuffin", and they are delicious! A small cafe in Northern CA, Dr. Insomniacs, carries them, and I get one evrytime I visit. Keep up the good work:)
